Owners need to take a few relatively simple steps to ensure they get good BIM models and data, and can then use and mine data from the models. Much of the data is already provided to the owner through BIM model objects used in the design and construction process. But, most of the time, this data is not coordinated and consistently applied data from project to project, architect to architect, and consultant to consultant. The Comprehensive BIM Management Plan from BIM Studios puts the BIM process on the right path.
Step 1 – Analyze your current operations, drawings, data creation, data management and storage and how you use and would like to see this information used by you, your consultants, contractors and suppliers and most of all, your facilities and engineering managers, and your facilities and engineering department personnel over the life of the building.
Step 2 – Create a BIM Implementation Plan to inform your consultants, contractors, suppliers, and employees how to create the BIM models, naming conventions, data conventions, responsibilities, and the sharing of BIM models and data. Create the database template for the BIM-AID.
Step 3 – Create a Project Implementation Plan to specifically coordinate software and versions, time lines, hand offs, formatting, BIM and data storage, and contracts. This plan can be prepared by the owner, BIM Studios or can be prepared by the architect, engineer, general contractor or construction manager for review and approval by the owner.
Step 4 – Create an Owners Internal BIM Plan on sharing of data, data management and storage. The BIM Studios or the owner creates the procedures and management tools for the various departments and identifies responsibilities and creates a timeline for action.
The experienced professionals of BIM Studios have the expertise and the prototype documents and models to help guide you through the process.
